Welcome to the 2011 Isle of Anglesey Walking Festival.
From the 28th of May to June 12th you can walk, see and learn about the treasures that this beautiful island has to offer. Hear about Anglesey’s many myths and legends of coastal and rural villages with tales of shipwrecks, cannibalism, smugglers and ghosts brought together in an exciting ‘Maritime History Weekend’. Explore the island’s industrial heritage on the Parys Copper Mountain, Amlwch Port and Menai Bridge walks whilst further inland, see the old coal mines at Pentre Berw, and the Victorian Walled Garden at Brynddu.
The 2011 festival includes more family friendly events, walks accessible to all and an exciting programme for schools including additional activities for secondary schools. In addition to this will be a romantic “speed dating” event and coastal walk, a special evening with ‘mediums’ and a bus tour exploring and tasting local produce on the Anglesey Produce Day. Some evenings will be spent in the company of local historians, with a chance to dine on local Welsh produce including ‘Cheese and Wine’. Refreshments will be available in most places and some will also include visits to local businesses.
We as Menter Môn are continuing our close working relationship with the Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) which is the statutory adviser to the government on sustainable natural beauty, wildlife and outdoor enjoyment throughout Wales and its inshore waters. CCW is also responsible for access and conservation issues across Wales. We are also working in partnership with The Ramblers Association (Ynys Môn Group), Isle of Anglesey County Council, the Anglesey Coastal Path Team, RSPB and GeoMôn, the Anglesey and Llyn Fens LIFE Project. GeoMôn is now a member of the prestigious European Network of which there are 33 members in Europe and is also a Global Geopark (UNESCO). GeoMôn is grateful to the walking festival for combining their activities as part of the European Geopark week.
All our walks are guided by experienced, informative guides who will ensure your enjoyment during the festival. Most walks are on the Coastal Footpath and feature stunning scenery, flora and fauna with varied geological rock formations - home to a large variety of nesting bird colonies, which is ideal for birdwatchers.
